The BJIMC was founded by Zhang Yong in 2006 as the only multidisciplinary competition for classical music in China. The competition began in the hope of creating a world-class platform of international competitions for all outstanding young musicians from different parts of China and across the world.

The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic have long been a prominent institution in international musical life. Boris Blacher, Iannis Xenakis, Wolfgang Rihm and China's Tan Dun are among the top contemporary composers who have written works for this group.
