Images and items from North China's Shanxi province were displayed at an event to celebrate relations between China and France, in Paris on March 24.

To mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, an exhibition, demonstrations of Chinese cultural traditions, as well as calligraphy and painting activities, were staged.

In addition, the two sides held a joint film screening to further mark their relationship and rich cultures. 

Images and videos taken around China by both Chinese and French photographers were provided by Datong and Jinzhong cities, bringing back memories for many attending the event.  

Alain Pompidou, the son of former French president Georges Pompidou, shared his family stories with China. 

French attendees looked on with fascination as famous folk crafts such as Pingyao varnishing lacquerware and Datong knot art was demonstrated, with attendees showing obvious enthusiasm for what they had seen.  

Shanxi has maintained deep ties with France over the years, including through culture, the arts and trade. Five cities in the province are now twinned with French cities.

During the event, Shanxi signed a memorandum of understanding with Seine-et-Marne department in France to further partnerships in various fields. And Shanxi Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries reached a partnership with the France-China Friendship Association to promote communication between two peoples.

The event was attended by more than 100 people, including photographer Grégoire de Gaulle, and Jiang Jianguo, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
