Technologies boost apiculture development

A bee farm in Kaihua, a county in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, has adopted internet of things technology to aid in the raising of bees, according to local media reports on Dec 18.

The bee farm is surrounded by more than 10 camera monitors and its beehives are made of food grade plastics, outside of which various data, including the temperature, moisture, and number of incoming and outgoing bees, are displayed on the screen.

The beehives are connected to an online information system via wifi technology, allowing bee farmers to monitor the farm from their phones.

"We are the first digital bee farm in Kaihua," said Yu Jianhui, bee farm runner in his 20s who established the farm in June this year.

The farm runner also noted that the intelligent beehives not only help reduce the breeding of wax moths, but also help save on costs and increase honey yields.

Yu added that the number of beehives at the farm will be increased from 50 to over 200 by the breeding season of next year, which is expected to boost honey output to 500 kilograms.

The real-time video surveillance on China's social media platform WeChat brings a sense of security to potential customers, said Yu.

The young farmer said he plans to promote his bee farm to more people by uploading videos to popular short video platforms, including Douyin, and join the local bee keepers association to learn from experts.
