A smart library opened to the public in Yuxin town, Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, on Dec 26, offering readers round-the-clock public library services with more convenience and accessibility. 

The two-story library, occupying an area of 260 square meters, was built at the site of a waste transfer station. Visitors can read, participate in cultural activities, and attend intangible cultural heritage shows at the library.

Unlike traditional libraries, the smart library is equipped with high-end technology such as facial recognition, intelligent self-service equipment, and a smart management system, enabling visitors to borrow and return library materials using only their library or ID cards.

"The smart access control system uses an automatic identification system, and intelligent self-service equipment makes it possible for readers to apply for a library card and borrow and return books," said Zhu Ya, chief librarian of the Xinyu Branch of the Nanhu Cultural Center.

Zhu added that self-sterilizing equipment will ensure that books are clean.

The library is decorated with local cultural items, including many intangible cultural heritage works of Yuxin town, such as mud cats and Nanhu Red Boat models.

More than 6,000 books can be checked out at the library, and the stock will grow every day.
