Wuhan, capital city of Central China's Hubei province, is among the top 10 Chinese cities in terms of its comprehensive economic competitiveness, ranking ninth in 2020, according to a report jointly issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Economic Daily.

The top 10 cities are: Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Taipei, Nanjing, Wuhan and Wuxi.

Among the top 20 cities, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Zhengzhou have improved greatly. Hangzhou rose from 18th in 2015 to 11th in 2020; Ningbo from 19th to 13th; and Zhengzhou from 25th to 20th. Meanwhile, the overall economic competitiveness of Macau, Qingdao, and Changsha has seen a relative decline.

From the perspective of the distribution of cities, cities with the strongest comprehensive economic competitiveness are mainly distributed in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration, the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, the urban agglomeration on the west side of the Taiwan Straits, the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration, the Chengdu-Chongqing city cluster and the central cities of Central China.

Overall, only a few cities are strong in terms of economic incremental competitiveness.

The economic incremental competitiveness levels of Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing are higher, and these cities are leading the pack among domestic cities.
