To cheer up young COVID-19 patients, Beijing's two designated hospitals have given colorful cakes and cartoon-shaped food to them on June 1, Children's Day.

Patients under the age of 6 each received a gift from the hospitals, said Wang Xiao'e, an official with the Beijing Health Commission, at a news conference on Wednesday.

Beijing's two designated hospitals have accepted 1,768 COVID-19 infections as of 7 am Wednesday since the latest outbreak began on April 22, and 1,266 have been discharged after recovery or released from quarantine.

All patients in the current outbreak are being treated by Beijing Ditan Hospital and Xiaotangshan Hospital.

Beijing reported seven new locally transmitted cases as of 3 pm on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections to 1,773 since April 22, according to Liu Xiaofeng, deputy director of the Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

Of the new infections, two cases were discovered at the community level and five were reported in quarantine areas, he said.

Of the 1,773 cases, Chaoyang district registered 425, the most in the outbreak, followed by Fangshan, which reported 413.

Dongcheng and Haidian districts have not reported any new cases in the past five days and five districts - Xicheng, Chaoyang, Shijingshan, Tongzhou and Daxing, have not reported any new cases in the past seven days.

The outbreak has been effectively contained, Liu said.
