Five years after Jason Statham faced off against the titular prehistoric creatures in the blockbuster The Meg, the Hollywood action star will reappear on the silver screen to join forces with Chinese actor Wu Jing as they dive back into the depths of the unknown.

Meg 2: The Trench, the anticipated sequel of The Meg, is set to hit Chinese theaters in multiple formats including IMAX on Friday.

The Meg, released in 2018, grossed $530 million at the worldwide box office, making it one of the most successful blockbusters co-produced by China and the United States.

Under the helm of English director Ben Wheatley, the new adventure sees Statham reprise his role of Jonas Taylor, a seasoned deep-sea rescue diver, to team up with Chinese scientist Zhang Jiuming, portrayed by Wu, as they embark on an exploration mission into uncharted waters, plumbing depths of nearly 7,000 meters.

The movie, majorly invested into by Chinese company CMC Pictures, held its global premiere on July 28 in Beijing’s National Indoor Stadium, on a giant Cinity screen, the biggest of its kind in the world.
