A research team from the Hubei Institute of Geosciences discovered abundant and typical Devonian coral fossils in the northwest of Yunxi county, Hubei province, in late March. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

He said the coral fossils were found in an area of over 300 square kilometers. The discovery indicates that the Qinling Mountains were once submerged by seawater and were home to ancient coral reefs approximately 350 million years ago.
