Former senior PLA official dies at 75
Former senior Chinese military official Xu Qiliang died of illness at the age of 75 in Beijing at 12:12 pm on Monday, an official statement said. Xu, who had served as a member of the Political Bureau of the 18th and 19th Central Committees of the Communist Party of China and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, was extolled in the statement as an excellent CPC member, a time-tested and loyal communist soldier, a proletarian military strategist and an outstanding leader of the People's Liberation Army. Xu joined the PLA in July 1966, joined the CPC in July 1967 and was awarded the rank of air force general in June 2007.
Xizang landslide kills 3, another 7 missing
A landslide struck a caterpillar fungus harvesting site in Muta township, Dengchen county in Chamdo city, Xizang autonomous region, at around 9:30 pm on Sunday, leaving three people dead and seven others missing, according to the local emergency authorities, Xinhua News Agency reported. Two individuals were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the people's hospital in Dengchen. Their conditions are reported to be stable and not life-threatening. A total of 489 personnel, including rescue workers and medical staff members, have been deployed to the site, along with 63 pieces of equipment such as ambulances and excavators. The search efforts are being supported by seven rescue dogs, eight satellite phones and a portable weather station.
Warships take part in live combat drills
Several warships of the People's Liberation Army Navy have recently carried out live-fire combat exercises to test their joint operational capability and commanders' skills. According to a news release from the South Sea Fleet on Monday, the exercises involved vessels such as the CNS Weinan, a Type 052D guided missile destroyer, and the CNS Yulin, a Type 054A guided missile frigate.
