State Grid Jiaxing powers China's largest isotope base

"Your regular on-site inspections of our electrical equipment give us great peace of mind," said a staff member at the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) Qinshan Isotope Production Base on July 17.

On that day, workers from the State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company visited the facility to assess its summer peak power needs, ensuring a "full-charge" electricity supply for uninterrupted production.

When China's first domestically produced Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) medical isotope, manufactured in Haiyan, Zhejiang province, officially hit the market, it brought new hope to cancer patients seeking a "Made-in-China" treatment. Behind this achievement was the strong and reliable power supply provided by State Grid Jiaxing, driving the growth of the country's largest isotope industrial base.

Major projects act as the "locomotives" of urban development, with electricity serving as their "escort". At the Qinshan isotope base, fully automated production lines are now operating at full capacity, just a year after the project was still under construction.

To meet the urgent needs of this strategic emerging industry, State Grid Jiaxing advanced its service frontlines. From the early construction phase, the company set up a dedicated power service team for the project, precisely assessing its power load and special requirements. Given the base's location at the end of the grid, the company held multiple technical discussions, formulated tailored power supply plans, and strengthened local grid capacity through proactive planning and new transmission lines — transforming a former "blank spot" in the grid into a reliable "core area". This effort ensured the successful energization and commissioning of the base's 10-kilovolt isotope substation, laying a solid energy foundation for operations.

In addition to reliability, the company drove intelligent upgrades to the distribution network, following the principle of "simple, reliable and cost-effective". Automation retrofits were implemented and smart devices such as fault indicators, quantum switches and distribution terminal units (DTUs) were installed, significantly improving the grid's self-healing capacity and response speed. These measures guarantee a continuous, high-quality power supply to the base's precision production lines.

To further reduce operating costs and promote green growth, State Grid Jiaxing assisted the base in developing rooftop distributed photovoltaic projects, making use of idle space to generate clean energy. This initiative not only aligns with the isotope industry's continuous production model but also reduces power costs, optimizing the park's overall energy mix, and strengthening long-term competitiveness.

From breaking reliance on Lu-177 imports to building a "thousand-acre, hundred-billion-yuan" medical isotope industrial cluster, Haiyan's isotope sector is entering a period of rapid growth.

State Grid Jiaxing plans to continue providing precise, efficient electricity services, improving grid connection efficiency, and enhancing user experience — offering stronger and greener energy support to this "life-saving industry" and fueling the development of new, high-quality productive forces.
