BEIJING -- A meeting was held in Beijing on the morning of Sept 17 to summarize an earlier event marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. At the Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Chinese president, and chairman of the Central Military Commission, met with representatives from various groups tasked with organizing the commemorations. Xi extended his gratitude and greetings, gave full affirmation to their hard work and outstanding achievements, and encouraged everyone to strive for progress and make new contributions.

Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of a leading group for the commemorative event, attended the meeting with the representatives and addressed them.

On the morning of Sept 17, the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People was filled with a lively atmosphere. Around 10 am, Xi and other leaders arrived at the venue, where they were greeted with warm applause. Xi and other leaders shook hands with the representatives and took a group photo.

Recently, Xi called a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to listen to a report summarizing the event. Speaking at the meeting, Xi emphasized that the event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was a solemn, grand, powerful, and deeply inspiring celebration. It further promoted the great spirit forged in the war of resistance, strengthened the conviction to advance the cause of building a strong country on all fronts and national rejuvenation, and demonstrated China's commitment to promoting the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

Xi pointed out that the leading group for the commemorative event and its executive bodies have implemented the decisions and arrangements of the Party Central Committee without compromise. They unswervingly adhered to high standards and strict requirements, and worked in a pragmatic and meticulous manner, thus successfully fulfilling the political tasks assigned by the CPC Central Committee.

Xi said it is imperative to fully leverage the tremendous and positive momentum arising from the commemorative event, continually make good use of the event as vivid teaching materials for patriotism, effectively harness and promote the confidence, pride, and vitality inspired by the event, and inject this momentum into the work of implementing the CPC Central Committee's decisions and plans, as well as addressing various risks and challenges. These efforts should serve as a powerful driving force for advancing reform, development and stability. Xi stressed upholding a correct historical view of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and World War II, remaining confident in our history, and drawing wisdom and strength from the great victory achieved by the CPC in leading the entire nation in a united and heroic resistance against Japanese aggression. He emphasized standing firmly on the right side of history, seizing the historical initiative, and continuously forging ahead for a better future by learning from history. Xi also highlighted the importance of effectively telling the stories of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and of peaceful development, and demonstrating to the world that China is a steadfast defender of the post-war international order, and a responsible major country committed to building a community with a shared future for humanity. He urged summing up the experiences and practices from organizing the commemorative activities to continually enrich and improve the system of ceremonies for the Party and the nation.

Xi's important remarks at the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee were conveyed at the Sept. 17 meeting.

It was noted at the meeting that Xi's remarks provided a profound exposition of the significance of the commemorative event, fully recognized the organizational and preparatory work, and put forward specific requirements for making good use of the event's outcomes, which should be carefully studied and effectively implemented. The meeting highlighted the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, as well as the vigorous support from all regions, departments, units, sectors of society, and the public in ensuring a complete success of the commemorative event. It is imperative to keep studying and implementing the guiding principles of Xi's speech, build on the significant outcomes of the commemorative event, carry out follow-up commemorations in a solid manner, and strengthen publicity and education. This will guide officials and the public to further align their thinking and actions with the CPC Central Committee's guiding principles, and transform the patriotic enthusiasm ignited by the event into a powerful driving force for advancing Chinese modernization, according to the meeting.

Deputy heads of the leading group for the commemorative event — Wang Yi, Yin Li, Li Shulei, Zhang Youxia, Wang Xiaohong, Wu Zhenglong, and Liu Zhenli — attended the meeting. Also present were members of the leading group, leading officials and staff members from various working bodies and other relevant departments, as well as representatives of military troops participating in a V-Day military parade, security personnel on duty, performers, volunteers, supporting staff, and members of the media.
