Meitu, a Chinese photo and video editing app, is ramping up efforts to expand its footprint in Europe and the Americas by utilizing technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and bolstering AI application in the imaging sector.

The explosive growth of AI technology — particularly in the field of image generation — has brought about immense business opportunities for Meitu's overseas expansion.

The technological recognition and global influence of Chinese AI-powered products are rising rapidly as AI technology can effectively lower cultural and language barriers, and have a greater impact on young users worldwide, according to a person in charge of Meitu's overseas operations.

The selfie app recently took the top position on the Apple app store's overall download charts in 17 European countries.

Its surge in popularity across Europe is largely driven by the newly launched AI-powered group photo function. Powered by advanced image generation and synthesis technology, this feature allows users to take photos across time and space with friends, family, idols or celebrities. It quickly went viral on European social networks as users had fun sharing their creations.

The innovative function is the result of Meitu's integration of AI technology with its localized operation strategy. The popularity in overseas markets signifies that AI can transcend cultures.

During an internal meeting at Meitu's recently concluded 17th anniversary, Wu Xinhong, founder of the company, highlighted that there are tremendous opportunities in the global imaging industry and that many of the needs of overseas users can be efficiently satisfied through AI-powered imaging tools.
