4.94 trillion kwh of electricity generated in 2012

BEIJING -- China's electricity output hit 4.94 trillion kilowatt-hours (kwh) last year, an increase of 4.52 percent year-on-year, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said Friday.

The newly-installed power generation capacity stood at 80 million kilowatts, raising the total generation capacity to at least 1.14 billion kw, up 7.5 percent year on year.

Some 324 grams f coal were used to generate 1 kwh of electricity, down 6 g year on year.

The SERC said it will enhance supervision to ensure work safety in the industry and prevent black-outs.

China remained the world's largest energy producer for a fifth year in 2012, the National Energy Administration said Wednesday.

The country's total installed power generation capacity had reached 1.14 billion kw by the end of 2012, and the country's hydropower and wind power sectors boasted the world's highest power generation capacities.
