Guangzhou govt cars travel 27% less

The monthly travel distance of cars for official use in Guangzhou, capital of China's southeastern Guangdong province, shrank by 27.04 percent on average in 2012, People's Daily reported Tuesday citing Guangzhou Commission for Discipline Inspection.

This followed the implementation of the Beidou vehicle monitoring terminal on government cars. The vehicle terminal, based on the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, integrates location tracking, travel path recording and distance analysis.

Each car for official use in Guangzhou travelled an average of 1,291.32 kilometers per month, a 27.04 percent decrease compared with a 1,769.97 kilometer travel distance before the implementation of the BDS. On average, each government car traveled 5,000 kilometers less in 2012, saving an expense of 5,000 yuan.

By the end of 2012, 8,491 government cars were equipped with the Beidou vehicle monitoring terminal in Guangzhou.

Local residents can report misuses of government cars on the commission's website, or by calling 12388.
