SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics, the world's largest maker of smartphones, memory chips and TVs, ranked eighth among the global top 100 brands, a report showed Monday.

Samsung's brand value reached $39.61 billion this year, up 20 percent from a year earlier, according to the global brand consulting company Interbrand. It equaled to the eighth place, up one notch from the previous year.

Samsung attributed the higher ranking to outperformance in the smartphone and TV sectors. The South Korean company recently unveiled its latest Galaxy devices such as Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note3 to maintain its position as the world's leading smartphone maker. The Galaxy Gear was the first wearable device rolled out by Samsung to create a new market for wearable gadgets.

Meanwhile, Apple, the iPhone maker, ranked first among the world's top 100 brands this year with its brand value at $98.32 billion, more than doubling Samsung's value. Google came next with a brand value of $93.29 billion, followed by Coca Cola with $79.21 billion, IBM with $78.81 billion and Microsoft with $59.55 billion.

Among South Korean companies, Hyundai Motor came at the 43rd place with its brand value at $9 billion. Kia Motors, affiliated with Hyundai, ranked 83rd with a brand value of $4.71 billion.
