Crested ibis makes a comeback in China

The population of crested ibis, a rare bird only found in China, has increased to about 1,500 thanks to 30 years of efforts by scientists from Shaanxi Province in Northwest China.

The birds, which were once seen in China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and Russia, were found in captivity in 1974 in Yangxian County of Shaanxi after the population had depleted to only seven.

From then on, Chinese scientists paid great attention to rescue the species. A special incubation, rearing and protection centre was established in the county. This year the birds will be retrained and sent back to nature, which scientists hope will turn the reproduction of the bird from artificial to natural.
