A major environmental journalism campaign was launched in Beijing on Friday.

Combating air pollution was one of the main aims of the campaign, Chen Changzhi, vice-chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, announced.

Protecting water sources and promoting renewable energy will also be highlighted.

Lu Hao, chairman of the Environment Protection and Resources Conservation Committee of the 12th National People's Congress, said 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of specialized environmental journalism in China and the campaign over the next five years will ensure a more pristine and beautiful country.

Environmental journalists will report from key areas about how regions have controlled air pollution and how they have ensured safe drinking water.

The anti-pollution campaign is led by the Environment Protection and Resources Conservation Committee and co-organized by 14 ministries and departments, including the CPC Central Committee's Publicity Department and the Finance Ministry. Journalists from more than 20 media organizations will be involved.
