Transparency urged in college students enrollment

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-06-09 14:28

BEIJING -?The Ministry of Education urged transparency and more supervision in college students enrollment, upon the completion of China's annual national college entrance exam on Sunday.

The exam, known as the Gaokao, takes place on June 7 and 8 this year in most areas, attracting nearly 9.4 million participants. Gaokao is viewed by many Chinese as one of the most important ways to change their fate.

However, some people began to doubt admission transparency and fairness after a scandal involving a corrupt admission official was exposed.

Cai Rongsheng, former head of admissions at Beijing's Renmin University of China, was arrested a week ago on charges of receiving huge bribes. Cai was put under official investigation in November 2013. Cai is accused of taking over 10 million yuan ($1.62 million) to "help" students during enrollment.

The ministry on Sunday ordered strict adherence to the country's admission policies and severe punishment to any malpractice in the enrollment of college students.
