Chinese archaeologists have found an ancient burial site containing 376 tombs and six pits with chariots and horses after some nine months of excavation.

Shaanxi Provincial Archaeological Research Institute announced on Wednesday that the total burial area is located in Taiping in Jingyang county, Shaanxi province, and covers an area of around 130,000 square meters.

The burial site spans a number of dynasties, and most of the tombs were built in the Western Zhou Dynasty (1050 — 771 BC), the institute said.

The excavation started in April 2014, when a highway project was constructed in the area where the tombs are located.

Archaeologists have found two to four horses and a chariot in each of the six pits, and the excavation is still continuing.

The discovery provides important information about the burial customs and life of ancient people in the area.
