Chinese-Filipino businessman kidnapped while jogging in Metro Manila
( 2002-10-11 17:03 ) (8 )

A Chinese-Filipino businessman was abducted by unidentified men in Pasig City of Metro Manila early Friday, the Philippine Daily Inquirer online news reported.

Police identified the victim as Antonio Tan, 50, owner of a hardware firm in Pasig.

Tan was reportedly jogging on the street at around 7:00 a.m. ( 2300 GMT, Thursday) when two unarmed men blocked his path and dragged him inside a van.

Witness informed the police about the latest kidnapping but Tan's family has not yet reported the incident to the police.

The abduction came amid the government's intensified campaign against kidnap-for-ransom groups and rogue policemen working with criminal syndicates.

Chinese-Filipino businessmen have been the main targets of kidnap-for-ransom groups in the Philippines for years because of their wealth and their tendency not to report crimes to the police.

However, cases of kidnapping on Filipinos are rising. Last month, two kids of a high-profile wealthy congressman were abducted on the way to school, shocking the whole society.

The kids were released four days later and were presented to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who directed the police to rescue them.
