Iraqi election opens under violence
(Reuters)
Updated: 2005-01-29 22:26

An Iraqi youth stops to read a sign warning people from going to polling centres, in the northern city of Mosul, January 29, 2005. Insurgents vowing total war on Sunday's Iraqi election unleashed a fresh wave of attacks on Saturday, killing eight people in a suicide bombing and three soldiers in a rocket strike. The sign reads in Arabic, 'Avoid polling centres....going near them will put you in danger because they are target for Mujis (Islamic fighters)', while the graffiti on the wall reads in Arabic, 'Long live Mujis'.
