China has 62,000 certified tax agents, including 20,000 practitioners, according to the latest figures released Tuesday by Chinese Certified Tax Agents Association (CCTAA).

CCTAA President Li Yonggui said there are about 2,860 tax agents' offices across China, which hire total of 60,000 employees since the association was founded a decade ago.

Qian Guanlin, deputy director general of the State General Administration for Taxation, described the certified tax agent as important part of the country's tax-related service sector, and the demand for such services is increasing as the country's market economy is expanding rapidly and administrative reforms.

China's ongoing administrative reforms, which cut government power in administrative approval and delegate non-essential economic affairs to groups representing related business sector, also create business opportunities for the country's tax agents sector, said the official.

The official said competition between China tax agents' offices and their overseas counterparts is set to get fierce in 2006, when China is expected to open the sector to overseas tax agents for full competition.

The administration is working on the definition of certification business and some other services in a bid to regulate the market and broaden business space for tax agents, said the official.
