Updated: 2005-02-23 02:07

Construction of a controversial US$560 million television centre, will begin on May 8 after delays for 1 1/2 years due to serious concerns about its design and other potential risks.

The new building spread over 20 hectares is the largest single real estate project ever built throughout China.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in January 2009, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation won the general contractor for the new building for China Central Television (CCTV) with a contracted bid worth 4.65 billion yuan (US$560), the newspaper said, quoting from the latest pronouncement from Beijing construction authorities.

Located at a busy commercial area near the World Trade Centre in Beijing's Central Business District (CBD), this area is composed of the CCTV central building, service building, and exterior construction project.

The central building is 234 metres high, and 494,900 square metres of construction area, with 52 floors above the ground and three floors under the ground, and 10 floors of base building.

Two towers of the central building will be joined together at 163 metres high with an "L" cantilever structure.
