Arsenal and Chelsea both needed late goals to emerge victorious in its Premiership openers.

Chelsea, the defending league champions, used a last-minute strike from Hernan Crespo to win against newcomer Wigan.

Crespo, making his return to the club after a stint in Italy, scored the dramatic game-winner in the 90th minute.

Crespo stole three points for Chelsea with a spectacular long-range shot from a tight angle. This left Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt without a chance with just seconds remaining in injury time for the game's only goal.

Arsenal, which finished second to Chelsea last season, beat 10-man Newcastle 2-0 at Highbury.

With Newcastle's Jermaine Jenas being sent off with a straight red card in the 32nd minute, the Gunners did not get on the scoreboard until late in the second half when Thierry Henry converted a penalty shot, with nine minutes left to play. Robin van Persie later doubled the home side's advantage.
