Gravy一種意思是 "加了面粉等用于調(diào)味的肉汁"(the juice which comes out of meat as it cooks, thickened with flour, etc., to serve with meat and vegetables),這種意思逐漸引申為"好東西"。
到1910年左右,gravy就有了"意想不到的輕而易舉獲得的錢財(cái)"(profit or benefit, especially if unexpected or easily obtained)的意思,1930年左右,這層意思又有了更細(xì)微的指代,專指"通過不正當(dāng)手段輕易得到的錢財(cái),不義之財(cái)"(money that is unearned or obtained illicitly; graft),這種意思至今仍在使用。
Gravy train就是gravy的引申義組成的詞組,意思是"不費(fèi)勁而能賺大錢的機(jī)會(huì),輕松而收益大的工作;美差,肥缺"(something from which many people can make money or profit without much effort, and which one would therefor like to join in),那么動(dòng)詞短語ride the gravy train的意思則是尋找挖掘這樣一個(gè)美差,相反的我們說 fall off the gravy train 或者the gravy train hasn't derailed,來表達(dá)丟掉肥缺的意思。不過,以上這些說法都是俚語的說法,正式場合都不會(huì)用這些表達(dá)方式的。
