19世紀(jì)早期，blue 是不體面(indecent)或猥褻(obscene)的意思。"Thread of blue" 在1824年指"唱歌、聊天或?qū)憱|西過程中涉及的稍有些猥褻的內(nèi)容" (MacTaggart, The Scottish Gallovidian Encyclopedia)。Variety在1921年描寫一次演出時這樣寫到："演出由大量的動人情節(jié)構(gòu)成，沒有粗俗的語言，只偶爾有一兩句不是很體面的臺詞。"
至于blue movie有"色情電影"意思的來歷，有三種說法。第一種說法是中國的妓院外墻一般被涂成藍(lán)色；第二種說法說是因為脫衣舞表演場所的燈光是藍(lán)色的；而第三種說法認(rèn)為早期色情電影是用家庭投影機放映的，影片放出來微微泛藍(lán)。在C. Gorham's 的Mr. Dolan（1949）里，一角色在臺詞里說到："How would you like to come up to my place and see a blue movie?"
至于"blue chip"的來歷，大家沒有什么爭議。在賭博游戲中，藍(lán)色籌碼的分值最高。20世紀(jì)初，blue chip被用于股市，指那些業(yè)績良好，分紅和收益穩(wěn)定的上市公司發(fā)行的普通股。就在1929年經(jīng)濟大蕭條到來之前，巴爾的摩《太陽報》曾這樣鼓吹: "Agriculture still has too much to reclaim...to become a 'blue chip' in the near future."
Blue flu的用法開始于20世紀(jì)60年代，專指警察或消防隊員組織發(fā)起的抗議活動，他們抗議疾病使他們不能正常工作。因為這些特殊職業(yè)的員工通常身著藍(lán)色制服，所以由此產(chǎn)生了不blue flu這種說法。
Blue devil (或被稱做bluebird 、blue angel)在當(dāng)代的用法中指藍(lán)色的膠囊，尤指含有阿米妥鈉的膠囊。1781年，F(xiàn)anny Burney用過blue devils，意思是沮喪的人: "Thinking ...that generous wine will destroy even the blue devils"。在19世紀(jì)，blue devils也曾用來描述開懷暢飲后的情形: "They, by a continued series of intoxications, become subject to what is popularly called the Blue Devils." (Scott, Letters on demonology and witchcraft 斯哥特，《妖魔巫術(shù)信札》, 1830)。
Blue最為我們所熟悉的意思還是"憂傷"或"悲痛"，而這個意思的最早用法或許可以追溯到英國詩人喬叟，"Wyth teres blewe and with a wounded herte, Taketh your leve" (The Complaint of Mars, 1385)。
