聽說過"in a pickle"這個短語嗎? 這是英語口語中一個常見的短語,意思是“困境、混亂、逆境”(a difficult or confused condition; mess”) 。
“In a pickle”這個短語的意思好象和”pickle”(泡菜)根本沾不上邊。不過,究其根源,"pickle"來源于荷蘭語中的 “pekel”, 是 “brine”(鹽水)的意思, 而當時"pickle"這個單詞用來指用鹽水或用醋進行鹵化腌制泡菜的方法。"To be in a pickle" 則非常形象地刻劃出某人所處的窘境,就象是被泡在粘糊而酸澀的液體里似的。
