這個短語用法的起源和馬有直接的淵源關(guān)系。馬兒過了壯年，咀嚼能力就會衰退，所以人們通過檢查馬牙來判斷馬的實際年齡和相應(yīng)的價值。馬的咀嚼能力退化到一定程度時，牙跟會顯露出來。這會使馬牙顯得特別長，所以long in the tooth就用來表示上了年紀的意思。
Long in the tooth的用法首先出現(xiàn)在19世紀的英國，甚至還有可能更早，但是已經(jīng)無從考證了。
