Willy-nilly這個疊音詞聽起來很有意思,它的本意是 “whether one wishes to or not; willingly or unwillingly”。你知道它是怎么來的嗎?
Willy-nilly原來是短語“will ye, nill ye”的縮寫。Nill和ye都是古語。Nill的意思是不愿意,差不多相當于現(xiàn)代語里的no + will。Ye 等于thou,相當于現(xiàn)在的you。加上虛擬語氣中的動詞,整個短語在書面上就是“be you willing, be you unwilling”(不管愿意不愿意)。
舉個例子,After her boss fell sick, she willy-nilly found herself directing the project. (老板病后,不管她愿不愿意,都得指導(dǎo)這項工程。)
Willy-nilly 的另外一個意思是 “in a disorganized or unplanned manner; sloppily; haphazardly (亂糟糟的、猶豫不決的)”,這個用法是后來才出現(xiàn)的。例如a willy-nilly person (一個優(yōu)柔寡斷的人)。
