and low-fare competition, American Airlines is exploring more profitable
international routes where competition is less intense and launching
cost-cutting programmes. One such strategy was its Sunday launch of daily

每日直航的政策可以幫助美國航空公司保持有利的競爭地位，由此afloat可以解釋為：free or out of difficulty, especially
financial difficulty（順利的，免受經(jīng)濟困難的）。舉個例子：The firm couldn't keep the business
afloat during the recession.（在經(jīng)濟衰退期間, 這家公司不能順利維持業(yè)務。）
另外，afloat原意指在空中或海上“漂浮的狀態(tài)”，如：The ship was listing badly but still kept afloat.
（船傾側(cè)得很厲害, 但卻仍然漂浮不沉。）由此，afloat也可引申為“流傳；散播；計劃等尚未定案”，舉個例子：There' s a story afloat
that he' ll resign.（ 有傳聞說他要辭職。）
