Is John working or skiving?
John: Hello, this is Real English from BBC Learning English, I’m John.

Jean: 大家好,我是董征。歡迎收聽(tīng)我們的地道英語(yǔ)節(jié)目。

John: In Real English today we look at words and phrases that you might not find in your dictionary.

Jean: 和漢語(yǔ)一樣,英語(yǔ)里也是有著非常多的成語(yǔ)和俗話的,所以要想能聽(tīng)得懂英國(guó)人日常的說(shuō)話聊天,就一定要來(lái)學(xué)學(xué)這些他們常用的通俗詞語(yǔ)。

John: Today’s word is skive, to skive.

Jean: Skive, 這個(gè)詞是什么意思呢?

John: Well you can use skive to talk about children who aren’t at school when they should be.

Insert 1

My brother was really naughty at school, he was always skiving off lessons to go and play football instead.

Jean: 噢,這個(gè)詞挺有用的。Skive就是偷懶逃學(xué)、逃課的意思吧?

John: Yes, and we heard there that the phrase is often used with the word ‘off’ - ‘to skive off’.

Jean: To skive off, 去逃學(xué)了。不過(guò)skive是只在形容學(xué)生逃課的時(shí)候才用的嗎?

John: No, you can use it to talk about work as well.

Insert 2

I haven’t got much work to do today. D’you fancy skiving and going for a long lunch?

Jean: OK, 原來(lái)skive還可以用來(lái)形容偷懶工作開(kāi)小差的意思???

John: That’s right, you can skive off from work, skive off from school. But you can also use it to mean being in the right place – at school or at work - but not actually doing any work!

Insert 3

He’s been skiving all day – just checking his email and playing on the internet – he hasn’t done any work at all!

Jean: Skiving也可以用來(lái)形容那些上著班卻不干正事的行為!對(duì)了 John,那這些偷懶逃學(xué)不干正事的人,我們有沒(méi)有個(gè)詞來(lái)形容他們呢?

John: Yes, you can call them skivers.

Jean: Skivers偷懶逃學(xué)不務(wù)正事者,對(duì),這個(gè)詞好!

John: But it’s not really that naughty, most people skive off sometimes.

Jean: 是嗎?難道你也這樣嗎John?

John: Yes, I suppose I sometimes skive when I should be working but not very often!

Jean: 那好吧,看你偷懶程度不算嚴(yán)重,我們先暫時(shí)不叫你skiver好啦。

John: I hope not.

Jean: 不過(guò),今天我們的節(jié)目時(shí)間就又到了。

John: Join us next time for more Real English from BBC Learning English

Jean: Goodbye!

John: Bye-bye!
