Mardi Gras是美國(guó)最大的狂歡節(jié)盛會(huì)，每年四旬齋（復(fù)活節(jié)前的40天齋戒）前的第一個(gè)禮拜二都會(huì)在新奧爾良舉行，有數(shù)百萬(wàn)人參加，通常從狂歡節(jié)前二個(gè)星期就開(kāi)始游行娛樂(lè)活動(dòng)，到Mardi Gras當(dāng)日則達(dá)到高潮。對(duì)許多美國(guó)年輕人來(lái)說(shuō)，能到Mardi Gras一游就像我們中國(guó)農(nóng)村小孩子盼望過(guò)年一樣開(kāi)心呢。
Mardi Gras由Mardi和Gras兩部分組成，Mardi源于古羅馬語(yǔ)“星期二”，因?yàn)榱_馬人把星期二叫做Dies Martis，這是羅馬戰(zhàn)神Mars（火星）的日子，Mars在法語(yǔ)中寫(xiě)作Mardi。Gras則有"盛大輝煌"之意。因此Mardi Gras就表示“盛大的星期二”了。
Mardi Gras是天主教徒在復(fù)活節(jié)（Easter）前第47天必須舉行的齋戒儀式，通常是禮拜二，源自法語(yǔ)Shrove Tuesday（懺悔星期二），因?yàn)榈诙炀褪茿sh Wednesday（圣灰星期三），即"四旬齋"的第一天，在這一天很多基督徒都用灰在前額畫(huà)一標(biāo)記，作為懺悔和必死的標(biāo)志，開(kāi)始長(zhǎng)達(dá)40天的齋戒（周六周日除外）。齋戒之前當(dāng)然要大吃大喝一番了，因此Mardi Gras又叫Fat Tuesday。
Mardi Gras狂歡節(jié)的氣氛勝似全球知名的的巴西嘉年華會(huì)，充斥著各式各樣的慶?；顒?dòng)，比如漫天亂撒的珠鏈、錢(qián)幣和奇奇怪怪的小玩具，身穿奇裝異服的“奇人異士”，當(dāng)然還有大桶的啤酒和King Cakes（國(guó)王蛋糕）。
The date is always on Tuesday and can vary from February 3 to March 9 in non-leap years or February 4 to March 9 in leap years. Like Lent, the date is dependent on that of Easter.
Perhaps the cities most famous for their Mardi Gras celebrations include New Orleans, Mobile, Rio de Janeiro, S?o Paulo, Venice, Salvador da Bahia, and Mazatlán. Many other places have important Mardi Gras celebrations as well. The carnival is an important celebration in most of Europe, and in many parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
