At the beginning of last century, the widespread use of the telephones, electricity, and motor vehicles forced thousands of people out of their jobs. People such as telegraph operators, blacksmiths and saddle makers and fitters were compelled to find work in other professions. After talking movies were released, people were no longer interested in silent films or their stars. That again rendered many people jobless.

Yet technological development cannot ensure social development.

In this century, we are becoming more aware of the changes in the environment and the availability of resources. That once again means social and economic transition is not only desirable but essential if we are to flourish in this new millennium.

So, the countries that grasp this opportunity to develop will have at their disposal the technological expertise, renewable energy, social understanding, political stability and environmental providence needed to flourish.

This calls for a rethink into humankind's link with nature.
