Comment on "Food safety and reporters" (China Daily, June 16)

The food safety publicity week was an important campaign for public awareness. But the authorities should take more measures to ensure food safety and food security.

Climate change has caused many natural disasters in the country. Over the past few weeks, we have seen devastating floods follow a debilitating drought in South China. The inevitable fallout of this will be reduced agricultural production this year.

Food safety scandals not only jeopardize public health, but also harm food supply. So the government has to take precautionary measures to prevent food safety scandals. For example, it should supervise the quality of grains and livestock before they enter the food-processing industry.
