Greek ruling conservatives take lead in polls

(Xinhua) Updated: 2013-01-28 10:10

ATHENS - Greece's ruling conservative New Democracy party took a narrow lead over the anti-bailout main opposition Radical Left (SYRIZA), three surveys showed this weekend.

New Democracy, the party of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, got 21.5-25.5 percent of the support in polls conducted for Greek dailies "Real News", "Proto Thema" (Top Story) and "Vima" (Tribune), while SYRIZA won 20.2-25.1 percent.

Following the recent release of new international rescue loans under bailout deals struck since 2010, more and more Greeks seem convinced that their sacrifices will lead to a better future, analysts said.

In another opinion poll conducted by polling firm Rass for Greek newspaper "Parapolitika", 62.7 percent of the respondents oppose the anti-austerity mobilizations of public transport employees, which have disrupted daily commuting for several days in Athens.

After a string of attacks against a shopping mall, political parties' offices and media targets in January, about 60 percent of those surveyed by Rass are worried about an escalation of domestic terrorist attacks by guerilla groups which have linked violence with the austerity implemented to resolve the debt crisis.
