Clinton takes double-digit lead over Trump following tape scandal

WASHINGTON - US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has an 11-point lead over her Republican rival Donald Trump after a leaked tape revealed Trump's lewd remarks about women, according to a national poll released Tuesday.

Clinton, the former secretary of state, is now favored by 49 percent of likely voters and Trump is backed by 38 percent, the PRRI/The Atlantic poll shows. Two weeks ago, both major party's nominees tied among likely voters at 43 percent in the poll.

Among women, Clinton has a commanding lead, 61 to 28 percent. Over the New York billionaire, however, Trump holds a lead among men, 48 to 37 percent.

Trump also leads among white voters, 45 to 41 percent, while Clinton leads among non-white voters, 72 to 17 percent.

Clinton has an advantage among white voters with a college degree, 53 to 37 percent. But white voters without a college degree still favor Trump, 52 to 31 percent, the poll finds.

In the tape, the GOP nominee described how he could grope and kiss women without their consent because of his celebrity status. The tape's release has led to fallout among some Republicans, who said they could no longer support their party's nominee.

The poll was conducted from Oct 5 to 9 among 1,327 voters. The margin of error is 3.2 percent. Close to half of the interviews were conducted after the release of the 2005 tape, which was termed by Trump as a "locker room talk."
