Mainland condemns political persecution on mainland spouses in Taiwan

BEIJING -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday condemned the "unreasonable and inhumane" demand made by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities on mainland residents who are married to Taiwan residents.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to the DPP authorities' policy that requires mainland spouses in Taiwan to retroactively submit proof of mainland household registration loss, or risk losing their right to reside in Taiwan.

According to local media reports, more than 8,000 mainland spouses have not submitted such proof and may lose their residency in Taiwan within the next month.

This crude policy stems solely from the DPP's separatist agenda and political self-interest, aiming to stoke cross-Strait hostility through intimidation, Chen said.

He emphasized that the mainland will act as a steadfast supporter for mainland spouses and cross-Strait families affected by the DPP's political manipulation, vowing to safeguard their lawful rights and interests.

Noting that there were increasing incidents in Taiwan that violated rights of mainland spouses, Chen urged the DPP authorities to cease politicizing judicial processes and ensure fair treatment.
