Alice Joseph, 23, has studied Chinese for about a year at the Confucius Institute on the University of the South Pacific's Emalus Campus in Vanuatu. After starting to learn Chinese as a hobby, she will now head to China in late August for undergraduate medical studies - a pivotal opportunity absent in her island nation - with the aim of becoming a doctor. "I hope to finish my studies there," she says.
