To address national strategic needs and explore the relationship between science and humanities in the age of artificial intelligence, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) launched the Neurocognitive Image Laboratory in Shanghai on Tuesday. The facility is designed to integrate liberal arts with sciences and humanities with engineering.

The laboratory will focus on key areas, such as cognitive neuroscience, image perception and intelligence, neuroaesthetics and art. It aims to conduct systematic research across the image, aesthetic, and spatiotemporal domains, employing multi-layered, multi-modal, and multi-temporal scales to study behavior, cognition and neuroscience.

Building on a deep integration of languages, images and cognitive sciences, the lab also plans to advance basic and applied research in human factors engineering and AI. It will establish a cross-disciplinary international collaboration network and an open, shared research platform spanning Europe, Asia and North America.

The initiative, supported by various European institutions, was spearheaded by a team of Chinese and international scholars, according to the school.

"The establishment of this laboratory is a testament to our commitment to leveraging our international network and strengths in the humanities, working alongside world-class academic institutions to explore fundamental issues facing humanity today. The lab's interdisciplinary, international, and integrative philosophy reflects the future direction and vision of our university," said Li Yansong, president of SISU.
