The Shanghai Meteorological Service announced the launch of SmarTyphoon, an intelligent agent specializing in typhoon monitoring, for public testing on Sunday.

Developed collaboratively by several institutions, including the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center and the Shanghai Typhoon Institute of the China Meteorological Administration, the agent aims to enhance typhoon monitoring and response capabilities.

The system is directly connected to authoritative monitoring data, providing minute-by-minute updates on typhoon paths, intensity, and the affected areas of wind and rain. It can generate detailed reports in the form of both texts and graphics, offering clear information about typhoon dynamics.

The system also features intelligent Q&A and can assess if a region is affected by a typhoon or not, providing disaster prevention tips accordingly.

According to developers, the system incorporates over 70 years of historical typhoon data, and supports multi-parameter searches and case comparisons, which is friendly to scientific researchers in this field.

The Shanghai Meteorological Service said that the initiative marks an important step in the AI for science strategy of the country's meteorological sector. In the future, by integrating more expert knowledge and regional resources, it aims to build it into a highly precise and reliable typhoon intelligence system, contributing to the world disaster prevention and relief efforts.
